Planning a Custom Aquarium
Outlined below are some of the key issues that should be addressed in the
early stages of planning a new display.
Location - Avoid direct sunlight. Ambient room lighting is
fine. Minimize proximity to heating or air conditioning ducts.
Placement - View through aquariums should be a minimum of
24" wide to facilitate maintenance and provide ample swim space for
fish.
Design - Aquariums should be longer and wider versus taller
and narrower. This enables proper gas exchange with the environment and is a
more naturally appearing tank. An aquarium is not a two-dimensional piece of
art. It is a three-dimensional microenvironment.
Access - A minimum of 14" above an aquarium is needed
for access and maintenance. In addition, a minimum of 24" inches below
or behind is needed for equipment.
Environment - Use caution when planning an aquarium in a
high traffic or loud sound area. Extremes can easily stress animals that are
sensitive to rapid environmental changes.
Budget - Aquarium systems can be costly. Plan carefully and realistically
to accommodate your desires.
